International Museum Day

Agenda

2025-05-17
2025-05-18
The European Night of Museums and International Museum Day will be celebrated on May 17 and 18.

International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18 and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has set this year's theme The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities, a motto that underlines the active role of museums in promoting more inclusive and sustainable communities, aligning these concepts with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this context, museums go beyond their traditional role as contributors to the preservation of heritage, also becoming dynamic cultural facilities committed to building more sustainable and inclusive communities. The 2025 theme thus places museums at the center of a global transformation in which they play an active role in promoting social, technological and environmental change.

MNAC has prepared a program for both days:

May 17th - European Night of Museums

7pm - Guided tour of the DIGITAL PRINTS exhibition with Maria de Aires Silveira and Joana Cunha Leal

9.30pm - Performance with João Pimenta Gomes (Capelo Wing)

Museum opening hours: 10am-2pm (except Saturday 17.05)

May 18th - International Museum Day

11pm - Workshop for Families*
Notebooks for walking and breathing. Workshop for families with children over 6 years old

Each family is challenged to create a travel map-book that begins with the works in the exhibition and ends with the places in each person's imagination.

Duration: 2 hours

3pm - Guided tour to  the exhibit ALDEBARAN FALLEN TO THE GROUND

4.30 pm - Coffee Talks

Fernando Rosa Dias and Maria de Aires Silveira talk is moderated by Catarina Carvalho editor of A Mensagem de Lisboa

At the inauguration of the first presentation of the recently restored paintings of the Café-Museu A Brasileira - in which the works of Nikias Skapinakis, Fernando de Azevedo, Manuel Baptista and João Hogan will be exhibited - we talked about the historical and not always peaceful relationship between the café, which was considered to be the only Museum of Contemporary Art, and MNAC.
