International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18 and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has set this year's theme The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities, a motto that underlines the active role of museums in promoting more inclusive and sustainable communities, aligning these concepts with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this context, museums go beyond their traditional role as contributors to the preservation of heritage, also becoming dynamic cultural facilities committed to building more sustainable and inclusive communities. The 2025 theme thus places museums at the center of a global transformation in which they play an active role in promoting social, technological and environmental change.
MNAC has prepared a program for both days:
May 17th - European Night of Museums
May 17th - European Night of Museums
7pm - Guided tour of the DIGITAL PRINTS exhibition with Maria de Aires Silveira and Joana Cunha Leal
9.30pm - Last Sounds Concert with João Pimenta Gomes (Capelo Wing)
Museum opening hours: 10am-2pm (except Saturday 17.05)
May 18th - International Museum Day
12pm - Workshop for Families*
3pm - Works from the Café-Museum of “A Brasileira”
On display are some works from the café-museum, selected in 1970 by critics José-Augusto França, Rui Mário Gonçalves, Francisco Bronze and Fernando Pernes, and recently restored. Before returning to its place of origin, this presentation at MNAC builds new connections and reflections, fostering dialogues with the long-term exhibition.
