LISBOA DÜSSELDORF FACES

Cities mean, above all, people. Lisbon Düsseldorf Faces exposes the idea that the essence of life is not the individual per se, but the individual as a ‘place of others’.
In 2025, the Lisbon Düsseldorf Initiative, centred on culture and the relationship between two cities - through knowledge, work between citizens, companies and institutions – presents this photography exhibition at the MNAC [PeP] Gallery and later at the Düsseldorf Stadtmuseum.
In black and white, and through the symbolic power of portraiture, two photographers from different backgrounds, Ralf Schilberg, a German portrait photographer, and Rui Soares Esteves, a Portuguese fashion photographer, have aesthetically and freely captured the substance of their own cities, Düsseldorf and Lisbon respectively.
In a dialogue of a plural nature, they created two complementary exhibitions spots - Lisbon Faces and Düsseldorf Faces: identities and alterities; professions and communities.
As observers who produce images, they do separately an approach and recognition of the two cities, arousing curiosity, questions and thoughts about those portrayed and also about the two places. Places that, to quote Cláudio Magris, ‘mean above all people, more or less familiar or almost unknown, but nevertheless witnesses, albeit partial to our existence’.
