Biography of the artist

Born in Porto, Portugal, José Pedro Cortes studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design (Master of Arts in Photography). Since 2005 his work has been subject of solo and groups exhibitions in numerous institutions and galleries such as Centro de Fotografia (Porto, 2005), Museu da Imagem (Braga, 2006), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon, 2007), Centre Gulbenkian Paris (Paris, 2012), Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2012), CAV - Centro de Artes Visuais (Coimbra, 2013), CAAA – Centro para os Assuntos da Arte e da Arquitectura (Guimarães,
2013), Museu de Serralves (Porto, 2014), Museu Berardo (Lisboa, 2014), Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo, 2014), Canadian Centre for Architecture, (2015, Toronto), Robert Morat Galerie (Berlin, 2015), CGAC - Centro Galego de
Arte Contemporánea (Santiago de Compostela, 2015), Museu da Electricidade/MAAT (Lisboa, 2015) and Galeria Francisco Fino (Lisboa, 2018). In 2014 was shortlisted for the prestigious BESPhoto Award.
His books, , Silence (2005), Things Here and Things Still to Come (2011), Costa (2013) e One’s Own Arena (2015), have all been published under his imprint Pierre von Kleist editions.
His work is held in many private and public collections and is represented by Galeria Francisco Fino.
