"Otelo e Desdémona. On the stage of passion" by Maria de Aires Silveira.
LECTURE SERIES. ORIENTALISM IN ART AND LITERATURE

Othello and Desdemona. On the stage of passion for Maria de Aires Silveira.
Curator at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, since 1989. She is very dedicated to the study of 19th century themes and authors, and the beginning of the 20th century. She graduated in History, and obtained a Master's Degree in Art History, at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Addressing a scene of dramatic painting, close to a fatal outcome, inspired by the play by William Shakespeare, and by the Spanish painter Muñoz Degrain, the curator of the exhibition will reveal aspects of the history of this work, significant by the expressiveness of the figures and objects, and revealing a particular modernity. Its acquisition, in 1881, testifies to the good cultural relationship between Portugal and Spain, and the donation, in the following year, to the Portuguese State, by Visconde Soares Franco, values a rare attitude of patronage sensitivity.
